WHERE This Elizabethan coaching inn is in the market town of Old Amersham, where city meets country. You wouldn’t believe it from the picture-postcard high street, but it’s on the Metropolitan Line (only 45 minutes from central London), while five minutes in the opposite direction you’ll find yourselves in the beautiful, rolling Chiltern Hills.
WHY Even though it was released 22 years ago, we still got rather excited by the fact that Four Weddings and a Funeral was filmed here – Hugh Grant’s “room” is called The Elizabeth and has a rather romantic four-poster bed. The rest of the hotel has been refurbished since Hugh last crossed the threshold, so its quaint inglenook fireplaces, crooked doors and cobbled courtyard are now paired with Ilse Crawford Scandi-chic interiors. I loved the bed we slept in so much I bought a new mattress on the way home!
Wine & Dine
However, the hotel is more proud of its gastronomic credentials than its movie cameo – with a menu that changes daily and showcases local produce.
