Honeymoon review: Amberley Castle, West Sussex

We headed to the the impressive Amberley Castle for a mini-break straight out of a fairytale

Visiting Amberley Castle in West Sussex is like being transported out of real-life and arriving in a picture perfect fairytale - the only difference was that we arrived by 90 minute train from London, rather than on a magic carpet or in a pumpkin carriage.

Amberley Castle is based in the quaint village of Amberley (quelle surprise!), and is surrounded by chocolate box thatched cottages, with the castle itself overlooking the whole village.

My travel companion loved the history of the castle; it’s set within the original, imposing walls, dating back to 1377, and inside it was filled with suits of armour, impressive swords and old-world paintings.

I was more enthralled by the flickering fire in our room, the deep-set window seat, perfect for perching in, and the enchanting gardens.

Bird lovers are in for a treat too; resplendent white peacocks strut about the grounds - and are more than willing to pose for a picture.

The team at the hotel made us feel like the royalty that once stayed there, catering to our every whim, and making sure we had everything our hearts desired; they even cleaned our muddy wellies post-walk, and left homemade biscuits in our room, along with a teddy from the castle, which we may have taken home as a stowaway...

I could write paragraphs and paragraphs on the huge bath, the incredible windows in the rooms and how much of a princess I felt wandering around the grounds, but what I really must mention was the food.

I'm not the most adventurous of eaters (pineapple on my pizza is as wild as I normally go), but here I found myself nibbling on pigeon and guinea fowl, and savouring every morsel - there's something ever so decadent about eating in a castle dining room that I would recommend to anyone!

After a wonderful sleep in the sumptuous bed, it was time to go back to reality - but not before a ramble around nearby town Arundel, which is just as charming as Amberley, and has a castle all its own.

Classic double rooms at Amberley Castle start from £175 per night on a bed & breakfast basis.
